The price chart

Candles with the levels drawn on price, moving averages and RSI, the intraday greek overlay, and how the chart's windows and intervals work.

The price chart leads the overview and fills /SPX/chart. A stock's candles run from 4:00 am to 8:00 pm ET, pre-market and after hours included, in every session on the chart, so the last candle is the top bar's price. Extended hours at the foot of the cog turns them off: every session is then 9:30 to 4:00, and before the open 1D shows the last session. An index's candles cover the regular session only (9:30 to 4:00 ET, or the early close), so the switch is off for an index.

Window and interval

The header picks the window (1D, 5D, 1M, 3M, 6M, YTD, 1Y, 2Y) and the interval (1m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 1h, 4h, 1d, 1w). Each window offers the intervals that keep it to about 2,000 candles. Volume runs along the bottom; an index has none.

1D is today once today has traded. Before today's first trade (the first seconds after the open for an index, the stretch after 4:00 am before a quiet stock's first pre-market trade) it shows the session before, and it switches to today with today's first candle.

Scroll over the plot to zoom time. The price axis zooms as on every panel on the overview: the wheel over the axis, a pinch, or a drag, and a double-click goes back to automatic.

Levels on price

The cog's levels section turns each one on or off:

  • Spot, in text colour.
  • Call wall (solid green), put wall (solid red), and zero gamma (dashed amber, the only amber on any chart).
  • Max pain (dotted) for the nearest expiration in the set.
  • IV move band: the expected move from the last close as an indigo band, with the close as a dashed line ("Oct 26 close 391.62").
  • σ bands: one and two expected moves either side of that close.

The near call wall and near put wall are drawn with the walls and turn on and off with them. Under the price, a chip gives the price's reading from the close ("+1.2σ"). Each level's label sits at the right edge with its price. The levels are the current ones, for the expiration set in the top bar. The chart keeps a pinned level from the key-levels strip in view. The chart's range follows the price and the levels within about twice the expected move; a level further out shows as a tag at the top or bottom edge with its distance ("Call wall 8,100 ↑ +5.73%"). Press the tag to bring the level onto the chart, and press its label to let it go. The levels and the expected-move band are the current snapshot's, so they're drawn at full strength from its session onward and faint before it.

Indicators

Indicators in the header adds simple and exponential moving averages (9, 21, 50, and 200 bars) and RSI 14 in a pane under the price. They're computed over the chart's own interval, and each one starts drawing at the first bar where it has enough history to be exact.

The greek overlay

On Pro, the chart opens with the overlay on: the session's dealer exposure by strike behind the candles, one column per candle, coloured as on the intraday heatmap. It starts as GEX; the cog's overlay switches it to VEX or CHEX, or off, and the chart keeps your choice. It's there at intervals from 1 minute to 1 hour. The cog's note says "Dealer exposure by strike, per candle."

Positioning is computed in the regular session, so pre-market and after-hours candles have no column of their own. With extended hours on, each one shows the last positioning before it, lighter: after the close, the session's last column; before the open, the close with the next morning's open interest once it lands, else the close. Hover a lighter cell and the legend says what it's as of: "as of the Oct 28 close".

Overlay filters… opens beside the cog. Each slider names what it changes, with one line under it:

  • Cells shown keeps the strongest cells. Lower hides the faint ones.
  • Opacity is how solid the cells are.
  • Faintest is how solid the weakest cell still is. Higher lifts the faint ones.
  • Cell size is how big each cell is, across the candle and between strikes.
  • Strike range is how far from spot the cells run, from ±1% to ±25%. Further out, a strike has no cell.
  • Change over is how many candles the rings and the fastest movers look back.

Under the sliders, three switches are each on or off (on: a filled box with a check):

  • Growth rings ring the cells whose exposure changed over those candles: a solid ring grew, a dashed ring shrank. They show once the candles are wide enough to hold them; zoom in, or pick a longer interval, to see them.
  • Fastest movers mark the two strikes where exposure is moving fastest in the newest candles: green where it's rising fastest, red where it's falling fastest. On the chart they are boxes over the candles. Outside the strike range, or off the chart, each one is a tag at the edge ("Rising 7,640 ↑ +5.73%"). The legend names both either way: "Rising fastest 7,640" and "Falling fastest 7,660". They follow the session's latest candles, so they move as the day goes on.
  • Colour by what's on screen colours the cells against the ones on screen, so a quiet stretch you've zoomed into still shows its shape. Off, every cell is coloured against the whole overlay, so one session compares with another.

Reset puts every filter back to its default.

Read it the way you read the heatmap: open interest is fixed through the day, so a column changes because price, time, and implied volatility moved, not because positions were opened.

Live

On Pro the forming candle updates as trades print and the levels' distances follow the live price. On Free the chart shows bars through the last completed one at 15 minutes and longer, and refreshes when the next snapshot lands. Without an account, the overview shows the last close's price line with its levels.

Your window, interval, indicators, levels, and extended hours are saved to your account.
