Expiration sets and dates
Which expirations a number counts (All, 0DTE, Week, Month, or dates you pick), and how each preset is defined.
Every positioning number counts a set of expirations. Total gamma over all of SPX's expirations is a different number from today's 0DTE gamma, and the walls can sit at different strikes. The set you choose in the top bar applies to every view on the page: the levels, the profile, exposure by strike, the heatmaps, the chart's levels and overlay, and max pain and the expected move.
The presets
| Set | Counts |
|---|---|
| All | Every listed expiration with open interest |
| 0DTE | The expirations that expire in today's session. Empty on a day without a session and after the last one expires |
| Week | Today through this Friday (the week's last trading day), 0DTE included |
| Month | Every expiration in the next 30 days: today through 30 days from today |
Week and Month are quick selectors: they count everything from today, so "this week" includes everything that expires before the weekend. Month isn't the calendar month: it reaches 30 days from today, so on October 26 it runs to November 25, and on a Sunday the week and the month both start with Monday's expirations. Dates shows the same expirations ticked, and names them ("Oct 19 – 23", "Oct 26 – Nov 23"); point at it for the count and the day the option chain shows. When the week or the 30 days have nothing left to expire (a ticker that lists only monthlies), Dates ticks the next expiration and says the range was empty. A day with nothing expiring reads "None today". All reads "All dates" and ticks every date.
The option chain on the overview shows one expiration: the last in the set. A date you pick shows that date, Week shows this Friday's, and Month the last one in its 30 days. With All it shows the nearest.
The standard monthly is the third Friday's expiration (the trading day before when that Friday is a holiday). SPX and RUT list an AM-settled monthly on that date as well as the PM-settled weekly; the AM one is the monthly.
Pick your own dates
Dates (Pro) opens the ticker's expirations grouped by month, each with its settlement, days to expiry, and a Monthly, Quarterly, or Next monthly tag. Pick as many as you like: untick today's date from All to see every date but today. The quick filters above the list pick for you: Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, LEAPS (more than nine months out), and 4 wks each pick every matching date. All goes back to every expiration. Clear unticks everything so you can pick from scratch. Changing the dates keeps the page's other settings, such as the heatmap's strike range.
An expiration is a date plus its settlement. On SPX's third Friday you can pick the whole date, or only the AM monthly, or only the PM weekly. The picks go in the page's address, so a link keeps them.
Max pain and the expected move
Max pain and the expected move belong to one expiration each, because a single settlement price across different dates means nothing. For a set, the strip and the Levels card show the nearest expiration in it. The max pain and expected move panels list every expiration in the set.
On Free and without an account
The positioning views count All expirations. The option chain page lists every expiration and doesn't use the set; on Free it opens expirations up to 45 days out.
