Frequently asked questions
How is max pain calculated?
For each candidate strike we sum the intrinsic value of all open call and put contracts at expiration. The strike that minimizes that total dollar payout is max pain — the price where the most options expire worthless.
Does the underlying always close at max pain?
No. Max pain is a gravitational tendency, not a guarantee. It works best in low-volatility environments with concentrated open interest and weakens around earnings, macro events, or when fresh flow stacks above or below the prior pin.
Why does max pain change throughout the week?
New open interest is added daily and existing positions are closed. As the chain reshapes — particularly in the final week before expiration — the max pain strike can drift.
